Dan's Flog (Fishing Log)
6-09 June Report PDF Print E-mail
Redfishing in Rockport is good, but the trout bite is slowing down.  I have made the drive to Corpus with fantastic results.  We had our 20 trout with most of them in the 23 to 24 inch range.  We had 2 over 30 that day also.  It looks like we will be fishing in Corpus for a while, but it is worth it right now.  On the calmer days, the surf is also good.

Did I mention the wind?  We are usually trout fishing by now, but it is still blowing.  The redfishing is about as good as it gets.  I've had a few days with 20 or more.  The wind finally laid down the last week of the month and we really hit the trout hard.  Limits of  big trout were easy to get.  June is looking up.  Lets hope the wind stays down.

The wind is still blowing nonstop.  There has been a huge school of black drum up North and limits are common.  The water is still  holding and there are also quite a few reds up tight on the shorelines.  The croaker are still too small to use, but they are getting bigger and the trout bite should go off soon!

The redfish fishing is OFF THE HOOK!  Most of the trips this month have been extremely successful for big redfish.  Cracked crab has been the ticket.  Our water came back up and we have hammered the reds.  There were a few days that the water dropped with the fronts and we weren't  able to get in to get the reds, but on those days were hammered the drum and sheepshead.  I actually had to put fish in the live well because we had so many fish.  In the middle of the month, we found a huge school of fish and we worked on them for the rest of the month.  Spring fishing has been GREAT and it only looks to get better with croaker season just a month away.

The weather again has been the story for this month.  The drum are still very steady.  Limits or near limits are normal.  I've had to cancel a few trips due to weather.  A few of the fronts have been VERY strong.  March is just around the corner and the bull drum are already showing up in Ingleside.  These fish are averaging 40 lbs or so and are a lot of fun to catch.  They should really school up in early March.  Our water is still unusually low.  Fishing is only going to get better when the water comes back in.  Look for the reds to turn on in March.

The fishing is good when the weather allows us to get out.  Mesquite Bay is full of drum with some reds mixed in and it has been very consistent for limits.  The water remains low and the redfish are still in South Bay.  The winter Texans have found these reds and the boat traffic is almost to heavy to fish.  Nuecess Bay has had its moments, but it hasn't been consistent for us.  It is unusally warm for us this time of year and the water temps are in the low 60's.
